Multiple World champion Geoffrey Kamworor, former world marathon record holder Patrick Makau and 2007 Boilermaker 15km champion Nicholas Kamakya lead a multitude of athletes to the inaugural edition of the Mully Half Marathon set for Sunday in Yatta.
The race showcases three disciplines including half marathon (21km), 10km and 5km and has a lucrative prize structure that will see winners in the main event take home Sh450,000.
The long distance running trio will be joined by athletes from the Tegla Louroupe Foundation as the organisers target at least 500 elite runners.
The event, which will be held in Sofia along the Thika-Garissa Highway has already received the necessary clearance by governing body Athletics kenya.
AK athletes representative Milka Chemos, who graced yesterday’s launch of the event, called on athletes to register in large numbers as the event has followed all the required procedures.
Chemos, a former world 3000m steeplechase champion, said: “I am calling on athletes to come in large numbers and register for the event. The organizers have ensured that winners will receive their prizes in time unlike in other events where participants go without pay. We hope the weather will be favorable enough for conducive running.”
In addition to the winners, second placed runners in both the men and women’s 21km race will walk away Sh190,000 richer with the bronze medallists ensured of Sh100,000.
The half marathon race attracts a Sh1000 registration fee while the 10km and 5km runners will pay Sh500 and Sh300 respectively.
