Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya (DAAK) will use Sunday’s Deaf Half Marathon at the Meru National Polytechnic, Meru County, to scout for athletes ahead of the National Deaf Athletics Championships slated for May 23-24 in Uasin Gishu.
The 4th edition will bring together deaf athletes from all over the country, and will feature top names including Beryl Wamira, Simon Kibai, and Daniel Kiptum, who will be back to defend their titles.
DAAK, secretary general, Bernard Banja said: “This event has become very important in our athletics calendar as it shows us the form of our athletes before the season begins. Most of the expected participants are already in training and we expect a fantastic show this weekend.”
The annual event will include 21Km and 10Km races for both men and women. The top three in the half marathon will be awarded Sh75,000, Sh65,000 and Sh55,000 respectively while the winners in the 10 Km race will go home Sh30,000 richer.
Title sponsor Safaricom returns to the race for the fourth year, matching last year’s Sh5 million sponsorship.
