Senator Mike Sonko has maintained a steady lead in the race for the Nairobi Jubilee governor nominations.

Results from nine out of the 17 constituencies showed he had garnered 68,208 votes against his closest challenger Peter Kenneth’s 28, 861.

Former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru came a distant third with 5,282 votes in results from Kibra, Embakasi East, Langa’ta, and Dagoretti North.

Dagoretti South, Mathare, Embakasi South, Embakasi North and Roysambu sub-counties had also been tallied.

County returning officer John Rotich announced the results at Nyayo Stadium on Thursday.

But even before they were announced, Kenneth rejected the results saying the process was not free and fair.

"I dissociate myself from the sham election that Jubilee party purported to have conducted and demand the same elections be nullified."

As the polls went on, both Kenneth and Sonko raised concerns with the way the exercise was being conducted.

Kenneth said the process had hiccups and was full of irregularities.

He alleged the exercise “was free for all” and that people from outside Nairobi were imported to vote for some candidates.

Sonko, on the other hand, said most of his supporters were locked from voting after their names were found to be missing from the register.

In the Jubilee Senate race, nominated MP Johnson Sakaja led the pack having garnered 55,562 votes from the nine constituencies.

Sakaja was followed by Kavemba Mutimba who had 5,174, William Wahome

(2,187), Muchiri Muthmao (2,183) and Badi Ali who had garnered 2,943 votes.

Sakaja, who initially wanted to run for governor, made an about turn in the last minute when he submitted application for senator position.

Woman representative Racheal Shebesh was also in the lead to capture the Jubilee ticket to seek her seat in the August general elections.

She had garnered 33,658 votes from the eight sub-counties while Millicent Omanga was second with 18, 621 votes from the already tallied results.

Karen Nyamu was third with 12,172 followed
