Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen will defend his seat with a Jubilee ticket in the August 8 polls.

The Senator won the ticket with over 83,000 votes, while his opponent John Kangogo came a distant second with over 12,000 votes.

"I would like to thank the

people

who believed in me, my family, Marakwet residents, my party,

friends

and even competitors who gave a good fight," Murkomen said on Tuesday.

"We now continue to work towards making our county a better place," he added.

The Senator said he will now focus on the August election and on serving Jubilee party.

"Before going national, I take this opportunity to say that i will serve the interests of you my people as well as of our party to ensure that we win the next phase."

Murkomen will be facing former Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo who is vying on a Kanu ticket.

During a rally last year, Opposition leader Raila Odinga asked Elgeyo Marakwet residents to elect Kimaiyo as senator.

He said Kimaiyo was a victim of a witch-hunt by leaders out to marginalise minority communities. Kimaiyo comes from the Kerio Valley.

Raila also accused Murkomen of being part of cartels that looted the National Youth Service.

Others who challenged Murkomen for the Jubilee ticket include

real-estate businessman Barnabas Boit and NGO specialist Michael Kibiwott.
