Two armed Pokot bandits from Tiaty subcounty were gunned down and a gun seized at Mukutani, Baringo on Sunday.

The bandits were shot dead as police stepped up security in the area ahead of the Jubilee primaries which started on Monday.

County police commander Peter Ndung'u said 15 cows and 40 goats were recovered at Chesirimion during the operation.

The bandits were taken out as they engaged the police in an exchange of fire as the officers sought to recover the animals.

"We assure the public of peaceful nominations in all volatile areas within the Kerio Valley," Ndung'u told journalists.

"We have deployed security personnel in the ongoing security operation to flush out bandits in Baringo and Laikipia counties."

The police boss made the comments when he accompanied top Jubilee officials manning primaries in the county.

Baringo county commissioner Peter Okwanyo and Administration Police (AP) commander Robinson Ndiwa were present.

Reverend Samuel Kobia, who is responsible for jubilee primaries in the region, lauded the police for the security measures.

He is spearheading the primaries in Baringo, Isiolo, Garissa and Tana-River counties.

"We have also communicated with Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery and he said security won't be an issue during the elections."

Kobia further said voting started without hitches in Baringo unlike on Friday when the exercise was called off.

Jubilee leadership cancelled the Friday polls following complaints of massive irregularities that marked the polls.

The JP official said those whose names were missing in the party registers were allowed to vote using IDs.

"Despite normal delays owing to difficult terrain and long distances, elections in Baringo kicked off in the five sub-counties."

"They went on smoothly in Baringo North, Mogotio, Eldama-Ravine and Baringo South, except in Tiaty," Kobia said.

He said the poll results for the top county seats will be tallied at the Kenya School of Government in Kabarnet.
