Police gunned down seven suspected bandits at Akwichatis, Tiaty sub-county following the ongoing operation to rid the area of illegal guns.

One gun and 17 rounds of ammunition were recovered after a heavy gun battle between police and Pokot bandits on Tuesday.

Regular police, KDF and Kenya Police reservists (KPR) are on a mission to recover over 6,000 illegal firearms in the area.

The operation was directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 17 following the incessant attacks by cattle rustlers.

Baringo police boss Peter Ndung'u told journalists that they will only call off the operation when convinced that they have dealt with the rustlers.

Ndung'u said two police officers injured in the crossfire battle were airlifted to Nairobi hospital for further treatment.

"Despite their knowledge of the areas' terrain, we will use both air and land forces to smoke them out of their hideouts."

Ndung'u said they have recovered 400 goats stolen by the bandits last month returned to the owners.

He denied the allegations that the police are using excessive force by torching houses and killing cows.

"What can our officers do when the enemies are hiding in between herds of cows?" he asked.

On Monday, Pokot elders led by former Nginyang councilor Yudah Losutan urged the government to call off the operation for peace talks.

"Innocent elderly persons and children are suffering from hunger and poor health due to the prolonged battle."

"We want it to end and elders from all communities brought together for peace talks," Losutan said.

Reverend Zachariah Chirchir and Bishop Daniel Chemon dismissed the Pokot elders’ plea.
