Uhuru's elder sister Margaret Wambui dies aged 89

President Uhuru Kenyatta's sister Margaret Wambui has died at

a Nairobi hospital after a short illness.

Wambui died on Wednesday aged 89. She was the

only daughter and the eldest of

two children of Mzee Kenyatta and his first wife

Nyokabi.

She had one son, High Court Judge Patrick John Kamau who passed away in 2005.

Wambui is known for being the first African woman mayor of Nairobi and the second African woman in the country to hold the position.

She was

deputy mayor of Nairobi in 1966 and mayor in 1971.

Her tenure in office was marked by many developmental programs, including expansion of the subways, the building of low-cost housing and sewerage, and the expansion of public health facilities.
