Security officers are not responsible for the killing of hundreds of animals in Laikipia county last weekend, IG Joseph Boinnet has said.

Photos reportedly from Laikipia have been circulating on social media showing dead livestock with gunshot wounds.

But Boinnet said on Tuesday that the animals were "probably killed by bandits".

"The operation is going on according to our plan. That's what I can tell you for now," said the Inspector General of Police.

"When I say the operation is going on well, I don't want to be misconstrued as saying certain unfortunate things are part of the plan. They are not. What I meant was that from our perspective we are executing the operation as we planned it - to drive out bandits - and we are succeeding," he clarified.

He also said police were receiving weapons through voluntary disarmament but did not have the exact figure of guns surrendered.
