Kenya kicked off its hunt for medals at the IAAF World Cross Country championships in Kampala Uganda by winning the mixed relay on Sunday.

Asbel Kiprop, the World and Olympic 1500m champion, started for Kenya by surging home ahead of Ethiopia’s Welde Tufa in the first round.

The duo had broken away from the chasing pack with the Ethiopian only once taking the lead.

Kiprop, however, regained the lead and sped off on the home stretch before handing the baton to female compatriot Winfried Mbithe.

Mbithe passed the baton to Bernard Koros before Beatrice Chepkoech raced home in 22:22:00 to bag the record win at the 42nd edition of the IAAF meet.

Ethiopia’s Bone Cheluke and Turkish Meryem Akdag came in second and third.
