Jubilee Mombasa branch has rejected the use of membership smart cards to conduct their nominations.

Members told National Elections Board commissioner Samuel Nyangeso they want another method of nominations, preferably the use of national ID card and party membership numbers.

Mombasa woman rep aspirant Amina Abdalla said the smart card system is prone to delays and corruption.

“There are many rich people who have bought the smart cards in large quantities and we don’t know their intentions. Whenever we go to Nairobi to buy them we are told they are out of stock,” she said.

Nyangeso said: “We have heard your cries. We will not use the membership smart cards.”

He oversaw the branch election board members who will be in charge of the nominations on April 22.

Nyangeso said the peaceful election of the nine county election board members shows the maturity the party has reached.

"This puts to bed the claims that there is a problem in the Jubilee Mombasa branch office," he said.

He said similar peaceful election of county elections boards have taken place in Kilifi and Kwale counties.

Lamu, Taita Taveta and Tana River counties are yet to form their elections boards.

On Thursday, a similar exercise in Nairobi county ended in disarray after chaos erupted.

On Friday, Anania Mwaboza, who is Governor aspirant Suleiman Shahbal’s running mate, said county elections board will be the party members’ eyes and ears.

“My appeal is for you to now ensure a free and fair nomination process,” said Mwaboza.

Nyangeso said the board will take all Jubilee aspirants through an induction course on elections guidelines according to the party’s constitution.

“I am satisfied with the team I have been given. Now we have the responsibility of planning how our nominations will be conducted in Mombasa,” said the commissioner.

He said different counties will come up with different nominations methods depending on the party support.
