Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has dismissed "machinations" to deny him a Wiper ticket for his Mombasa governor bid.

He said despite "underhand deals" to lock him out of nominations, he is still in Kalonzo Musyoka's party.

"You are cheating yourself ... I am not leaving Wiper. But I am ready for anything ... If Wiper brings nonsense, I will stand as Jobo Jobo," he said on Thursday amid speculation that he has formed his own party ahead of the August 8 polls.

'Jobo Jobo' is the MP's nickname.

He asked Kalonzo to explain why nominations for the Mombasa governor's seat that were to take place last Saturday failed to do so.

"Who postponed that? What criteria did they use to arrive at that decision? Is there anything sinister? I have no idea" he said.

He dismissed a section of party members who asked Wiper’s National Elections Board to give secretary general Hassan Omar direct nomination.

He said they were not genuine party members. “Those were just people picked from the streets,” Awiti said.

On the recently released opinion poll by TIFA, Awiti said no one in his right mind will believe the results of the survey.

The survey put Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho in a commanding lead in the race to retain his seat with a 68 per cent approval.

He was followed by Suleiman Shahbal with 17 per cent, Omar at seven per cent and then Awiti at three per cent, the survey showed.

Seven per cent of respondents were undecided, according to the survey.

But Awiti said no opinion poll will ever rank someone having an approval rating of 68 per cent.

“Unless the candidate has no opponents,” said Awiti.

Speaker Thaddeus Rajwayi who was with Awiti said people will vote for the MP because his policies are aimed at improving the lives of the locals.

“Awiti is Awiti, with or without a political party. We expect him to be the Mombasa governor come August 8,” he said.

He said no amount of political wheeler-dealer tactics will prohibit the Mombasa people from electing the leaders they want.

“We will not be cowed. Our only business is to ensure Awiti is made beautiful, ready for the Mombasa people, who are the groom, to take him,” said Rajwayi.
