A blogger has been fined Sh300, 000 for disobeying a court order that restrained him from defaming Safaricom boss Bob Collymore on social media.
Cyprian Nyakundi will serve four months in jail if he fails to pay the fine imposed by High Court judge Lucy Mwihaki yesterday.
“The court will not condone deliberate disobedience of its orders and will not shy away from its responsibility to deal firmly with proven contemnors,” the judge said.
Nyakundi was convicted for contempt of court on December 1 last year following a successful application by Collymore.
He was asked to present himself in court thrice to give his mitigation, but he did not show up and gave no justifiable reasons for his failure, the court noted.
The court then ordered the blogger to present himself in court for mitigation on January 19, but he didn’t show up. On the same date, Collymore complained that the blogger continued to post his photos online.
Mwihaki said Nyakundi had demonstrated he had no respect for court orders.
Collymore sought to have the blogger sent to civil jail for six months.
