More than 30 students are recuperating at Nkubu Consolata Mission Hospital in Meru after a suspected case of food poisoning.

The students from Nkubu Boys High School were rushed to the facility after they started vomiting and experiencing abdominal pains.

The nursing services manager Nicoletta Karimi said they started receiving the students on Wednesday afternoon.

"Several were treated and discharged. Others came in the morning (Thursday) but all are in stable condition," Karimi said.

Imenti South police boss John Cheruiyot said 68 students had been treated by Thursday evening.

Meru county director of Public Health Ephantus Kariuki said they are investigating the matter.

"We have ordered water and food samples from the school to be collected and analysed at a government chemist," he said.

Efforts to get a comment from the school administration were futile as journalists were barred from accessing the institution.

The incident comes just a week after more than 20 pupils of Mutuguni Primary School in Chuka Igamba Ng'ombe were taken to hospital after eating wild fruit.

They were treated and discharged from the Consolata Cottage Hospital.
