Kenyans are divided over the incident where Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho was barred from attending a presidential function on Monday.

The governor was blocked from accessing the venue where President Uhuru Kenyatta was due to launch the Mtongwe ferry services.

Joho was blocked by GSU and Flying Squad officers and later claimed he was placed under house arrest until Uhuru leaves the area.

But police at the scene denied the claims saying, there was a normal security operation following the President's visit.

Through the hashtag #UhuruvsJoho, Twitter users took sides on the matter.

While some said Uhuru was "disgracing himself", others defended the head of state for "demonstrating true leadership".

Joho received support in some sections but also came under fire following arguments that he gate-crashed at the event and is now playing the victim card.

Hussein Aden said: "Mombasa Governor Joho has played the victim card enough and it is becoming boring. He should look for something else now."

Chris Bingwa said: "Joho is setting a bad precedent."

Inno Deckoks tweeted: "We are not in a police state, we are miles ahead of what was the norm under former President Daniel Moi and Jomo Kenyatta's regimes, we shall not allow."

Another user said: "Uhuru is fighting Nanok, Joho, Kingi but can't fight corruption and unemployment, where are your priorities?"

Mohamed Amin said: "I don't like Kenyan leaders at all but Joho here is true to his words standing up to the president..."

Faith Nasia faulted Uhuru's advisers, saying "Museveni tactics won't work in Kenya".

"Uhuru is practicing neo-colonialism, but it won’t and it will never work," Britte Adams said.

Gabriel Njuguna said: "Uhuru has been on the same platform with likes of Kidero, Ranguma, and Rasanga. We haven't seen baby tantrums like Joho's."

Wambui said: "Uhuru should use his capacity as president on national policies. Let him leave the launch of some things to counties."

Joho feels Uhuru and the Jubilee government are riding on projects funded by donors to gain political mileage.

The Governor challenged Uhuru to list projects launched by Jubilee from scratch for the benefit of the people of Mombasa.
