Former Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi may soon land in big trouble over utterances implying than he could recruit young men for violence.

Mt Elgon regional commissioner Stephen Momanyi confirmed that Kapondi recorded statements which were then forwarded to the DPP for recommendations.

Investigations into his conduct are being carried out,” the commissioner told the Star in a phone interview on Tuesday.

Kapondi was

captured on video allegedly issuing threats against his opponents at a funeral. He allegedly warned his critics of dire consequences after a section of the crowd booed him, in the video that was widely shared on social media.

Trouble started at the funeral in Cheptais, Kapondi's former home turf,

after parliamentary aspirant Evans Kiprotich claimed he had occupied a parcel of land bought using CDF funds while in office.

"Kama ni kupanga, vijana, hakuna mtu anajua kupanga kushinda mimi. Na nikiamua kupanga mtajikolea," he is heard saying in Kiswahili.

This loosely translates to: "When it comes to planning, young men, there is no one who knows more than I do. If I decide to do so, you will urinate on yourselves."

Mt Elgon MP John Serut and his Sirisia counterpart John Waluke also attended the burial.

Kiprotich told the Star on Tuesday that he will ask NCIC boss

Francis ole Kaparo to bring Kapondi to book.

"We are giving police a week to take action against Kapondi. If they do not, we shall go to the NCIC for help," he said.

Many people, including the former MP, were arrested and charged when the Sabaot Land Defence Force killed more than 1,200 and left at least 10,000 displaced between 2008 and 2009.

The group was crashed in a joint military and police operation in 2009.

But it was reported that at least three people were killed in the last two weeks in a style reminiscent of members of the force.

A lobby, the Western Rights Human Watch, said in 2014 that failure to implement a lands injustices task force's report led to the regrouping of militia in Mt Elgon.

The report recommended the prosecution of individuals who allegedly financed, planned and instigated violence through militia in Mt Elgon.

They included Kapondi, Serut and spiritual leader Jackson Psongowyo, who allegedly organised oath-taking drives for the militia.

More on this:

The Mt Elgon parliamentary seat has so far attracted nine aspirants against incumbent John Serut.

Top on the agenda are the atrocities caused by Sabaot Land Defence Force militia and land disputes.

Serut and Kapondi have criticised each other on who abetted the rise of the militia.
