Teachers in Western have said they will not adhere to directives by the TSC to teach on weekends.

Knut chairman Patrick Chungani yesterday said teachers never signed an agreement to work on Saturdays and Sundays.

Education CS Fred Matiang’i on Tuesday said regulations on weekend activities in schools will be revised to create consensus.

He said the new regulations banning non-academic activities on weekends had raised concerns. Yesterday, Chungani said the Labour Employment Act is clear on teachers’ terms of service.

“These regulations are meant to suffocate and punish teachers. Let the government employ more teachers than plot to overwork the few tutors who are there,” he said. The state has proposed Sh2 billion for hiring teachers in the next financial year.
