The court has extended the mass voter registration by three more days to February 19.

Judge Chacha Mwita said this on Thursday following a petition by activist Okiya Omtatah seeking an extension of the mass listing.

He said Omtatah also convinced the court of challenges posed by situations where people may have difficulties in accessing registration centres.

"The petitioner has argued passionately. He has given examples of areas where a ward is nearly as vast as a constituency," Mwita said.

"That argument has merit and perhaps informs why the first respondent (IEBC) has to conduct periodic mass voter registration," he said.

Mwita said IEBC has not shown any signs of wanting to extend the voter registration to allow those who are yet to register do so.

"In order to give any would-be potential voter to register, the respondent is hereby directed to continue with the drive until February 19 at 6 pm," Judge Mwita said.

The electoral commission had set February 14 as the last date of registration.

Omtatah said the earlier plan would have denied some Kenyans their right to be listed to take part in the August 8 poll.

In his petition, Omtatah had wanted the court to compel IEBC to continue with the voter listing until June 7, 2017, being 60 days to the general election.

Judge Mwita, however, said that it will be impossible to close the drive as Omtatah wanted, citing logistical and financial implications.

In an earlier ruling, the court said the listing was to continue for two days ending Thursday, February 16.
