A man was on Tuesday jailed for one year after pleading guilty to stealing pepper worth Sh20,000 from a Nairobi trader.

Samson Chacha, 34, allegedly stole three sacks of the produce from Hano Mariko on February 4 at Ring Road Pumwani.

Chacha also pleaded guilty to stealing a handcart worth Sh10,000 from Hezron Njoroge at Muthurwa market on the said day .

The court heard that Mariko was buying pepper in Muthurwa market when Chacha requested to carry his luggage to Eastleigh.

The prosecution said the accused, , who had agreed to charge Sh400 as transportation fee, left with the luggage but disappeared.

"They tried to trace him but he was nowhere to be found," the prosecution team said.

Mariko said that he later learned that Chacha had not only got away with his goods, but had also stolen the handcart.

Chacha told chief magistrate Heston Nyaga he was remorseful for stealing the pepper as he could not help avoid taking them.

"I ask the court to forgive me. I am willing to pay the complainant his money and return the handcart to Njoroge," he said.

"I thought of starting a pepper business in Rongai and that was why I stole," Chacha told court.
