Two rallies one for Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos and another for his rival Livingstone Talel were disrupted by rowdy youth as campaigns for the Jubilee Party ticket intensified. The youths on Friday forced Tolgos to cut short his programme at Kapkitony centre in Keiyo South, which is the backyard of area MP Jackson Kiptanui.

MP Kiptanui is also running for governor. Youths, who looked drunk and were shouting slogans in support of Kiptanui, stormed the venue of the meeting and caused confusion, forcing Tolgos and his team to leave prematurely. There were claims the youths had been hired by Kiptanui’s team.

“I’m not aware of the meeting you are talking about,” Kiptanui said. At a hotel in Eldoret town a meeting hosted by aspirant Talel ended in disarray after youths started shouting and accusing Talel of being used to divide votes in the region. Police had to be called in to stop chaos. The rowdy youths tore calendars and other campaign materials the aspirant had distributed. Talel denied claims he is being sponsored by a senior Jubilee politician as a strategy to divide votes.
