The trial of Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama over alleged inciteful statements he made at a Cord rally held at Uhuru Park in 2015 began yesterday.

The prosecution says it has overwhelming evidence against the senator and has lined up 10 witnesses to testify against him and activist Japheth Muroki who faces similar charges.

Police officer John Gichuhi was summoned to give information. He told trial magistrate Francis Andayi how Muthama uttered inciting words while addressing the rally organised to support striking teachers to get a pay rise.

Gichuhi said the senator incited the crowd by saying those who go to work will be stoned.

“He started his speech by saying bado mapambano [the struggle continues] and went further to say the opposition will lead Kenyans to State House,” he said. Gichuhi said Muthama said, “If teachers are not being paid, nobody will go to work and whoever goes will be stoned.” Gichuhi, who was at the time attached at Makadara police station, told the magistrate he had been deployed to Uhuru Park on September 23.
