A 23-year-old woman on Tuesday was shot dead by thugs in Mlolongo town, Machakos county. Maurine Mueni was shot twice in the chest by armed robbers at her M-Pesa shop. The robbers had earlier attacked another M-Pesa shop.

They robbed Zipporah Ngena of Sh10,800 at gunpoint before proceeding to Mueni’s shop. “A group of three men, one armed with a pistol, went to Dreamland M-Pesa shop, posing as customers. They ordered Ngena to surrender the cash she had,” a witness, who did not want to be named, said.

The witness said after Ngena gave them the money, before they proceeded to JUTEC Communication, where they accosted Mueni. He said Mueni refused to hand over her money. The thugs then shot her. He said the trio ran away without taking anything from the shop. Mueni was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Athi River police boss Sharma Wario and AP commander Stephen Matu said they have launched a manhunt. A spent cartridge was recovered at the crime scene.
