Foreigners and Kenyans have been urged to ignore the travel advisory issued by the US government last Friday.

Kenya Ferry Services MD Hamisi Gowa yesterday said security at the Likoni channel has been, and will continue to be good.

The US government warned its citizens against visiting the Coast and Northeastern region because of “terror attack threats by al Shabaab and high crime rates”.

The advisory cited Mandera, Wajir and Garissa, Tana River and Lamu counties among those that US citizens should avoid.

The advisory also warns tourists against traveling to Malindi in Kilifi counties and a neighbourhood in Nairobi.

The US embassy recommended that citizens only visit Mombasa Old Town during daytime, and avoid using the Likoni Ferry.

The advisory states, “Fatal crimes, including carjackings, muggings, home invasions, burglaries and kidnapping could occur at any time.”

Gowi said the channel is manned by both police officers and highly trained private security guards 24 hours a day.

“Everything is fine. But that’s not to say we will ignore the warnings,” he said.

On New Year’s Eve, 14 youths suspected of planning to rob residents at the Mama Ngina Gardens were arrested at the channel.

They were armed with crude weapons.

At the weekend, French ambassador Antoine Sivan termed the Coastal city a safe haven.

He said Mombasa’s security has significantly improved over the years.

Sivan said that although the French embassy will encourage citizens to visit Mombasa, the government should also ensure it prioritises security.

The US embassy said the new travel advisory replaces the one issued last year.
