Governors have been put on the spot over attempts to loot public funds to finance their 2017 campaigns.
Controller of Budget Agnes Odhiambo has warned governors against devising fraudulent schemes to pocket millions of taxpayers’ money.
She spoke when she appeared before the National Assembly Finance Committee last week in response to fears raised by Mavoko MP Patrick Makau.
He wanted to know measures the CoB has put in place to ensure the county bosses don’t fleece public coffers. “Audit reports have revealed runaway graft in counties. What steps is your office taking or considered seconding officers to oversee spending in counties as we head to elections?” Makau said.
Auditor General Edward Ouko’s reports for 2014-15 put governors in the spotlight for presiding over likely loss of billions of shillings.
The sum is said to have been lost through unsupported expenditure, ghost projects, irregular payment and faulty procurement.
