President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated Chief Justice David Maraga on his decision to publish new rules of procedure for cases of corruption and economic crimes.

Uhuru said on Monday the new rules make it clear that those who misuse or misappropriate public money will be held accountable faster.

“As always the President stands ready to give Chief Justice Maraga, and the entire Judiciary, his full support in enforcing these new regulations, and, more broadly, in ensuring the war on corruption is won,” said Statehouse spokesman Manoah Esipisu.

Esipisu said Uhuru expected other agencies that play a role in the fight against corruption to borrow a leaf from Maraga and take responsibility for their part the war so that it is won once and for all.

Maraga has said he will for both High Court and Magistrates’ courts that preside over corruption cases.

The rules would ensure that corruption cases will be heard within two days and suspects charged without room for adjournment.

"I am already taking active steps in the reorganisation of the anti-corruption and economic crimes division of the high courts presided over by Magistrates,” Maraga said

But he noted that the war against corruption needs multi-faceted efforts from the police, EACC and the DPP.

"Our leaders have been quick to point fingers, but the war on corruption is not (only) a judicial function," he said in a speech read by DCJ Philomena Mwilu.

Maraga was addressing the Mombasa Law Society's centennial celebrations, which also marked the retirement of long-serving judges John Mweru and Anyara Emukhule.
