Two girls believed to be from the same family died on Monday after they were trapped in soil in Monyerero village, Kisii county.

The girls, aged between 9 and 13 years, were digging for murram used to smear houses when the 1pm incident occurred.

County police commander Agnes Mudamba said residents managed to retrieve the bodies at 3pm.

"I want to send my sincere condolences to the bereaved family because it is a big loss," she said.

Mudamba advised parents not to send their children to dig for murram especially in the rainy season because the soil becomes lose.

"Parents has better for themselves because they can easily detect when there is danger," she said.

Meterorological department director Henry Sese said parents should take caution during the December short rains.
