The CJ asked the legal fraternity to be acquainted with the electoral timeline in order to ensure the speedy conclusion of petitions likely to arise from next year's polls.

He said petitions from the 2017 general elections may double the number seen in the previous election cycle where 188 petitions were filed countrywide.

He attributed this increase to the many political seats being vied for, which have drawn enormous public attention and legal battles.

"Challenging an election, its conduct or its result should, however, not be interpreted as a sign of weakness but as proof of strength, vitality and openness of the political systems in Kenya," Maraga said.
