Muchai car CCTV video clips shown in murder case

Video clip evidence showing the movement of vehicles during the murder of Kabete MP George Muchai, his two bodyguards and driver was yesterday played in court.

Witness Anthony Mburu from the county government of Nairobi operated the CCTV camera showing the vehicles move from Westlands into the CBD on February 7 last year.

He was led by senior assistant deputy DPPs Catherine Mwaniki and Kennedy Kemo. Mburu said on that day he was called by his supervisor to run the CCTV that captures motor vehicle number plates.

He told trial magistrate James Wakiaga there are two systems, CCTV that which only captures vehicles within the city centre and one that captures motor vehicle number plates from Westlands to the city centre.

The system is known as the motor vehicle number plates recognition and is controlled by the county government.

Mburu said after running the CCTV video clips from 7am to 6pm he left CID officers and his boss in the control room. The clips were downloaded to provide the day’s footage.

Mburu was testifying in a case in which Margaret Wachuiri and Raphael Gachii, alias Kim Butcher, Kimani Anyonyi, alias Musti, Stephen Lipapo, alias Chokore, Erick Muyera, alias chairman, Jane Kamau, alias Shiro, and Simon Gichamba have denied the murder charges.

All the accused persons also face several violent robbery charges before the Milimani chief magistrate’s court.

At the High Court they are accused of killing Muchai, his two bodyguards police constables Samuel Kalikia and Samuel Matanta and driver Stephen Wambugu on the night of February 6 and 7 on Kenyatta Avenue, Nairobi.

The accused are still in remand until the case is heard and determined.

They were denied bond following objection by the prosecution. All the suspects are also accused that on the same date on Waiyaki Way, Nairobi, jointly with others not before the court, they were armed with pistols and robbed Michael Gituto of a motor vehicle and other personal property worth Sh416,000.

They are said to have threatened to use actual violence on Gituto.

The accused face charges of robbing Gladys Waithera of her motor vehicle and other property worth more than Sh600,000 on the same night on Green Belt Estate in Wangige, within Kiambu.

They are accused of robbing Irene Wambui of her property worth Sh15,000 on the same night. They are further charged with being in possession a Ceska pistol and ammunition without permit and handling suspected stolen property.

Muchai and his aides died from heavy bleeding. They had bullet wounds in the chest and heads. They were also robbed of two pistols loaded with 30 bullets and a briefcase whose contents are yet to be known.
