Five teachers are being held at Langata Police station after they were found conducting holiday tuition with over 50 students from various schools at House of Grace Church in Lang'ata in Nairobi.

The arrest follows a directive from Education PS Belio Kipsang who dispatched a team of education officers accompanied by the police from the Nyayo Stadium Police Post.

Kipsang says the ministry had been tipped to the effect that teachers had been conducting holiday tuition for three weeks now for students from various schools at the Church premises.

"The Principal Quality Assurance and Standards officer John Okiya addressed the students, urging them to take their luggage and go home until January 4, 2016 when schools open," read the statement.

According to the statement, the students were clearly happy at the crackdown on holiday tuition, saying on condition of anonymity that the government talks to their parents to stop coercing them to attend holiday tuition.

"Some of the students attending the illegal tuition are from Kabarak High, Sunshine and Lureto Musongari High schools among others," it read.

arrested for providing holiday tuition.

The ministry further

suspended the registration certificate of the school.

The school's head teacher, Martin Wanjema though he denied the allegations that more than 100 pupils were found confined in one of the school's dormitories, was taken to Buru Buru police station to record a statement.

Under the Section 37(I) of the Basic Education Act, 2013, subjecting pupils to holiday tuition is a crime that attracts a fine of One Hundred Thousand Shillings and/or a jail term not exceeding one (1) year.
