A 28-year-old casual labourer died on Friday morning after diving into a 20-foot deep pit latrine to retrieve an ID and Sh600.

Bernard Kirui jumped into the latrine to retrieve the items after the owner, Jackiline Chelimo, promised him the money as a reward.

Nyota sub location assistant chief Rahael Tuei said Kirui was the breadwinner to seven siblings and an ageing mother.

"He was a hardworking youth who was doing casual jobs along Mwahe-Masaita road that was being repaired by the county government," he said.

Tuei said Chelimo's items fell in the latrine while she was using it.

Chelimo then asked passersby for assistance and Kirui volunteered after he was promised the money as a reward.

He said the body was taken to Molo Subcounty Hospital mortuary.

Kuresoi deputy OCPD Paul Rono said they are investigating the incident.
