More than 500 students from Kisii University in Baringo county held protests against the sudden closure of the Eldama-Ravine campus.

They accused the Commission of University Education of effecting the closure without due consultation.

Accompanied by elders from the Lembus community, the students marched to the subcounty offices in Eldama-Ravine town to demand reopening of the campus.

They chanted anti-Jubilee slogans and carried placards written on: 'We won't walk 100km away to acquire education', 'give us time to comply with requirements' and 'CUE to review the fate of Kisii University Eldama-Ravine campus'.

"We cannot accept the closure of our only institution of higher learning. It has been serving our children, especially from within the subcounty," Thomas Chelugo said.

Last Monday, CUE shut the Eldama-Ravine campus, prompting the university to dissolve their programmes and relocate students to the Kabarnet town campus.

The institution has been given 10 months to meet CUE's requirements for operations but this period lapsed.

Kabarnet campus director Joseph Kandie said the closure shocked parents and students. He said many of the students are unable to afford the cost of joining campuses away from home.

“I wonder the criteria used to close the college when the ones located in hardship areas like Kapenguria and Lodwar were left operating,” he said.

He added that satellite colleges are pocket-friendly since they served students from low income families.

Kandie said the commission should allow the university at least one year to rehabilitate facilities to meet the required standards.

He said elders had pledged five acres of land to construct the university and that the county government promised Sh10 million to build the campus.

CUE closed Kisii University campuses in Nyamira, Kerugoya, Ogembo, Kianja and Migori due to a variety of reasons including lack of clean drinking water, small lecture rooms and lack of ramps for the disabled.
