A task force has been assigned to to ensure cases involving children are cleared within 6 months of being filed.

The National Council on the Administration of Justice said they will ensure the cases are fast-tracked to ensure they are out of the justice system within the stated period.

Chaiperson Justice Martha Koom said delays in the judicial system end up hurting children.

"We will try as much as possible to keep the children out of courts and get them to the society and schools," she said on Tuesday.

She was speaking at the launch of children service week at the Nakuru Law courts.

Koome also warned parents against reporting children to police stations instead of handling disciplinary issues at home.

"If we can take back murderers and robbers into our society then why can't parents admit living with their children?"

Resident judge Maureen Odero said that children, being the most vulnerable members of the society, need extreme care and treatment by those who are with them.

"There is a reflection of the society with the way children are treated so we must be careful, we must treat them well and it starts with handling their cases with utmost care," she said.

She said that the judiciary is determined and up to the challenge to clear the backlog of cases involving children to ensure that they are re-integrated into the society.

The children service week was launched on Monday by Chief Justice David Maraga in Nairobi and is meant to kick off in the whole country.
