Canadian Foreign Minister Stephan Dion has praised Kenya for its role in peacekeeping missions in the world.
He urged Kenya to continue supporting peace initiatives. Dion said UN peacekeeping missions have contributed to global peace, security and stability. He spoke on Wednesday, when he paid a courtesy call on President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi.
“We’re seriously considering peacekeeping missions in countries facing instability. I’m sure we will work closely with you,” Dion said.
Uhuru affirmed Kenya’s commitment but said it was necessary to restructure the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. The UN sacked the Kenyan force commander for failing to respond to an attack on aid workers.
Uhuru said Kenya was not consulted and will not b a scapegoat for the mission’s structural failures. Kenya is withdrawing its troops from South Sudan in response.
