Police in Lamu are interrogating a man who attempted to escape from custody after he was arrested with 50 stones of bhang on Monday.

Athman Vae, 30, from Mbwajumwali was arrested with the drugs which were disguised in a box covered with onions and tomatoes.

The man is said to have jumped into the ocean and swam for over two hours with handcuffs on his hands.

He was finally recaptured by officers who swam after him while others pursued on a motorised boat.

Police said the suspect has been on their radar among the leading drug peddlers in Lamu East sub-county.

Vae was arrested at Mtangawanda jetty in Lamu East as he was attempting to ferry the said drug from Lamu Island.

Lamu East police boss Muchangi Kioi termed the suspect as dangerous and notorious.

"We have him in custody and shall have him arraigned soon," Kioi said, adding that they have nabbed bhang and heroin worth Sh150,000 in street value for the past month.

"All suspects are expected in court anytime this week," he said.
