Samburu county government has purchased 10,000 bags of maize to distribute to starving families.

More than 70,000 locals in the county are facing famine mainly in

Wamba and Baragoi areas.

National Drought Management Authority Samburu coordinator Alex Leseketeti, on Wednesday, said distribution in the most affected area will start immediately

with the help of

World Food Program.

“It was agreed at the County Steering Group meeting that the county government will purchase the relief and WFP would be in charge of distributing it to the worst affected areas,” he said.

He termed the situation in Wamba in Samburu East and Baragoi in Samburu North as being in the ‘late alert stage’ and in need of immediate intervention.

“The body condition of livestock is deteriorating and children under five years are malnourished. However, no disease outbreaks have been reported so far,” Leseketeti said.
