A private investigator has been found guilty of attempting to extort tycoon Ashok Shah of Sh5 million. Abdulrahim Shalo was found guilty of impersonating an Interpol officer. Chief magistrate Ann Ong’injo acquitted Shalo’s co-accused Hiten Raja.
Shalo and Raja faced charges of conspiring to kill Ashok and his family, but these were dropped. Ong’injo said the prosecution failed to prove the two conspired to kill Shah. Raja and Shah were business partners before falling out.
Shalo was accused of threatening to forward Shah’s name to the KRA for allegedtax evasion, if he failed to part with the Sh5 million. “The accused person wanted to get money from the complainant by instilling fear in him,” Ong’injo said.
She said Shalo, 60, presented an expired Interpol card to Shah. Shalo urged the court to release him on lenient terms because he is diabetic and has two children with special needs. The sentencing will be on Friday.
