Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto has announced he will run for senator in 2022, after he completes his second term as the county CEO.

He said he will seek reelection on the Chama Cha Mashinani ticket and thereafter, run for senator so he can “continue championing the success of devolution”.

Rutto said he wants to ensure his pledges are fulfilled before handing over to another governor. He spoke at the weekend during the handing over of a classroom block built by Unilver Tea Company at Koiwa Central School, Konoin

Rutto and his rival Julius Kones, the chairman of the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation, met at the function. Rutto urged Kones to support him in 2017 and he will in return endorse him in 2022.

The governor had earlier announced he will run for President after completing his two terms.

“I still have five more years. If you want my support, you should endorse my bid to defend this seat. After all, you are still young in politics. In 2022, you will be fully ripe to run,” Rutto told Kones.

But Kones said, “Just as we agreed in 2013, that whoever sneaks through will go for one term and then support the other in 2017, it is now your turn bwana governor to back me.”

He said his good relationship with the governor should not be misconstrued to mean they are planning something in 2017. “I am fully in the Jubilee Party and there is no doubt about it. The governor has taken his route.”
