Kenya is finalising the process of developing a policy and strategy for radiation safety to address emerging issues associated with nuclear energy ahead of 2022 timeline for generation, Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter has said.

The Energy and Petroleum CS yesterday said the country has made steadfast progress in the development of its legal and regulatory framework for the nuclear power programme.

He said the National Energy Policy that formally introduces nuclear into the energy mix was adopted by the Cabinet in September 2015.

“The energy bill 2016 which seeks to legislate the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation has been passed by Parliament,” Keter said in a statement.

The accession to the convention on nuclear safety is being reviewed by the Cabinet for consideration, Keter said, before formal ratification by the National Assembly.

The government is also pushing for Kenya to be placed as a signatory to the Convention on Nuclear Safety.

Kenya is working on a draft nuclear regulatory bill 2016.
