Korir out to defend Chemususu Marathon title this weekend

Nicholas Korir will be seeking to defend his title in the third edition of Chemususu Dam Half Marathon set for this Saturday in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County.

The Iten-based Korir said he has prepared well for the race despite an expected battle with the fellow podium finishers from last year, Geoffrey Yegon and Peter Some, .

The duo will be out to better their placing from last September in the hunt for the Sh150,000 top prize.

Race ambassador and Cherangany Member of Parliament Wesley Korir and 1,500m Olympic champion Faith Chepng’etich, both former participants are expected to grace the accassion.

The organisers of the event are targeting 2000 participants who will be inspired by 1997 Cologne 3000m steeplechase champion Bernard Barmasai and former Boston Marathon champion Geoffrey Mutai (Boston). Race director Sammy Chumba said the event will feature 21km, 10km, 7km and 5km races.

“Both men and women winners in the 21km race will go home with Sh150,000 each while Sh50,000 will be given to each of the 10km champions,” said Chumba.

Eldama Ravine Member of Parliament Moses Lesonet said there was an improvement in the number of sponsors who have come on board to support the race this season.

The event received sponsorships from various corporate companies including National Social Security Fund (Sh1m), Rift Valley Water Services Board (Sh1.5m), Karen Roses Limited (Sh500, 000), New KCC(Sh250,000), KenGen (Sh250,000), Kenya Forestry Services(Sh100,000), Water Services and Regulatory Board (Sh100,000), Konza City Metropolis (Sh100,000) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority(Sh100,000).
