Kakamega residents have to cross over to Bungoma county for medical attention because of the prolonged nurses’

strike.

Kakamega health workers went on strike last week. They said they want better working conditions and promotions. A spot check by the Star at the Webuye County Hospital yesterday revealed long queues of patients from Kakamega.

Martha Baraza from Malava in Kakamega county said, “I was forced to come to Bungoma for medication because I went to Malava District Hospital and there was no one to attend to me.”

Residents urged Health executive Peninah Mukabane to intervene. Health workers say they will not resume duty until their demands are met. The county government has said it addressed medics’ grievances and urged them to return to work.

Webuye County Hospital medical superintendent Patrick Mutoro yesterday said Bungoma medics are overwhelmbed by the huge number of patients from Kakamega.

‘’We are trying our best to contain the situation. This hopsital does not have adequate equipment to help a large number of patients ,” he said.
