Sports CS Hassan Wario will today appear before MPs to explain management problems Kenyan athletes encountered at the Rio Olympics in Brazil.

The National Assembly Committee on Labour and Social Welfare will question Wario on the ministry’s role in preparations and management of the delegation to Brazil in the just-concluded Olympic games.

“We deemed it necessary to summon the CS to shed light on allegations of Team Kenya mismanagement by Nock, the legitimacy of disbanding it and transferring its roles to Sports Kenya,” Labour committee chairman David Were said.

The summons was due to conflicting information the committee is getting from the ministry, the National Olympics Committee of Kenya, the athletes and media. The alleged mishandling of the athletes sparked public outcry. Top leaders such as Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and MPs, including the 2012 Boston Marathon winner Wesley Korir (Cherengany), called for Wario’s resignation.

Korir, who was part of the team, blamed Wario and said the ministry is being managed by people lacking “knowledge or interest”. Mt Elgon MP John Serut, a Labour committee member, said the CS must explain claims athletes were forced to buy their own air tickets after Nock failed to get them.
