Security has been increased in the Kerio Valley following renewed clashes between Marakwet and Pokot herders on Wednesday, after two months of peace.

One Marakwet herder was seriously injured on Thursday after a shootout between the warring communities at Mokoro location, Elgeyo Marakwet county. Area police boss Emmanuel Rono said police are on high alert to thwart bandit attacks. He said police patrols and surveillance have been enhanced in the volatile Kerio Valley.

“Police are prepared to prevent lawlessness in the Kerio Valley,” Rono said. Baringo county commissioner Peter Okwanyo said chiefs and elders in Baringo East have been instructed to identify bandits. He said security officials from the two counties will hold a joint security meeting in an attempt to restore peace.
