Kenya will not achieve its global education commitments by 2030, Unesco’s Global Education Monitoring Report has said.

The country is cited among the African countries that will achieve their education goals 70 years later than the 2030 SDG deadline.

The report says universal primary education in Sub Saharan Africa will be achieved in 2080. Universal lower secondary education completion will be achieved in 2089, while universal upper secondary education completion will be attained in 2099.

For Kenya, all of these will only be achieved in the next century.

The GEM report, formerly known as the Education for All Global Monitoring Report, is an annual study published by Unesco to monitor progress for education targets in the new sustainable development goals framework.

The report states that education needs fundamental changes to reach global development goals.

“A fundamental change is needed in the way we think about education’s role in global development, because it has a catalytic impact on the well-being of individuals and the future of our planet,” Unesco director general Irina Bokova said.

“Now, more than ever, education has a responsibility to be in gear with the 21st century challenges and aspirations, and to foster the right types of values and skills that will lead to sustainable and inclusive growth, and peaceful living together,” she said. The report states that education systems should factor in environmental concerns.
