The Land and Environment Court in Kericho has barred National Land Commission from resettling members of Ogiek community in a plot around Mau Forest.

The court also lifted a ban by the National Land Commission on the access to the register of any parcel of land in Marioshoni and Nessuit areas in Njoro and Molo subcouties, with the aim of evicting 4,906 petitioners from their land and resettling the Ogieks. Justice Sila Munyao ordered the NLC, county registrar and surveyor to stop the arrangements to make fresh demarcations and resettling and issuing of title deeds to the Ogiek in the areas until the suit is heard.

Some 4,906 people from Nessuit and Marioshoni filed a petition on August 29. They say the NLC has imposed a further ban on dealings related to Nessuit and Marioshoni of the land within Mau Complex. The case will be heard on October 15.
