Budalang'i MP Ababu Namwamba is yet to initiate a membership recruitment drive to launch his new political party.

Claims have emerged that the former ODM secretary general has been unable to raise funds to recruit members into his new political outfit.

Ababu was recently given the go-ahead to use the name National Liberal Party after previous attempts failed.

More on this:

In a letter dated August 22, the registrar of political party says: "Your application for change of name has been considered as required by law and the name National Liberal Party has been approved,"

But the MP may have to wait a little longer to mobilise members for his party.

While Ababu was unavailable for comment, NLP chairman Ishmael Oyoo on Monday denied claims of financial difficulty.

Oyoo, who is coordinating the party's registration, said: "the process is on track,"

"Those allegations are not true. We are on the ground doing the necessary to comply with the requirements of the Political Parties Act," Oyoo said.

But he did not give details of when the recruitment drive will start.

Read:

The requirements for full registration is that a party must have a membership of at least not fewer than 1,000 registered voters from each of more than half of the 47 counties.

The membership must reflect regional and ethnic diversity, gender balance and representation of minorities and marginalised groups.

The party's governing body must also have the same characteristics.

So far, NLP is yet to institute both requirements. A fee of Sh600,000 is also required to be paid before a certificate of provisional registration is issued.

After six months of provisional registration, the registrar issues certificate of full registration to a political party that has complied with the requirements.
