A violent boundary dispute on Sunday night has left three people dead in Lakole location, Wajir county.

Rukia Mohamed, 70, and her son Mohamud Bishar died instantly in the midnight shootout that lasted two hours.

Nine-year-old Halima Ali, who was shot in the stomach, died while on her way to Nairobi for referral at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Her mother, Habiba Abdi said: "There were sporadic gunshots [and] we all kept our heads down. After it stopped I started checking on the children [and] that is when I found my daughter in a pool of blood as the stray bullet caught her."

Wajir county commissioner Michael ole Tialal urged residents to stop harbouring criminals and instead, flush them out to face the full force of the law.

"We already have names of culprits and we will pursue other leads," Ole Tialal added.

It is alleged that two communities in the area - Ajuran and Dagodia - have been fighting over resources such as water and pasture for some time now.

Area MCA Adow Kusow called for an immediate end to the dispute.
