Fishermen in Lake Naivasha are raising funds to introduce more than 500,000 fingerlings into the water so as to increase fish stocks in the water body.

The group's association chairman David Kilo said the

increased number of fishermen and boats in the lake had put pressure on the fish resource.

"We are challenging the county government to work with is in this noble plan of restocking the lake whose stocks have dwindled," he said.

The decision came amid concerns that the catch capacity has reduced due to the cold weather.

"The drop has also been attributed to overreliance on the lake and acts of poachers using nets which are not of the required size," he said.

However, the department of fisheries in Nakuru county is of the idea that the fishermen adopt cage fishing as a way out of the stocks shortage woes.

Mathew Ngila from the department said the project was well designed by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI) and stands to reduce the pressure on the lake.

"Cage fishing will be done in an area not measuring more than one hectare. It will be done on experimental basis and can be discontinued once found to have negative impact," he said.

Ngila said that the system had been carried in other lakes and dams and was very successful.
