Nairobi Cord MCAs have threatened to skip the official opening of the new assembly on Tuesday on grounds that Raila Odinga was not invited.

The new August House is set to be opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta following an invitation by Speaker Alex ole Magelo.

In a text message dispatched on Sunday, Majority Whip David Mberia told the Cord MCAs to skip the session and instead attend a Kamukunji at Tulips restaurant, Kileleshwa.

"Kindly attend without fail," Mberias message read in part.

Cord MCAs led by Mathare North MCA Oscar Lore on Sunday threatened to abide by the direction of the coalition's leaders in the August House.

Lore and Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok said that their efforts to have Raila open the assembly have been futile.

City MCAs have been conducting their plenary sessions at Charter Hall and will now conduct business at the state-of-the-art chambers refurbished at Sh54 million.

The new facility has new communication equipment, more spacious and with better public galleries.

But speaker Alex ole Magelo said that the matter of the who addresses the assembly is a non-issue adding that there is nothing wrong with the President opening the assembly.

"Raila and the President are great friends. They have no problem," he said.

The argument of the Cord team is that the former Prime Minister should open the House and not Uhuru because the opposition coalition forms the majority of members.

Minority leader Abdi Guyo asked the group to respect the President and refrain from acts that may border on indiscipline in the House.

"We have asked MCAs not to heckle the president or disrupt the ceremony," Guyo said, "Cord MCAs are stooping too low,"

"During the 34th memorial service of the founding President Jomo Kenyatta, the president spoke and invited the opposition chief to greet the congregation. Where on earth do you find the President speaking then welcoming the opposition chief? That was a sign of great respect to Raila," Guyo added.

All the same, the Cord MCAs are divided on the idea of skipping the session and disrespecting the President just because Raila was not invited.

"That is being petty. We support our party leader Raila Odinga but respect to his political opponents is also paramount. If you disrespect the president- what will happen if Raila is the president and is also disrespected?" a Cord MCA who asked not be named asked.

In June 2014, Cord and Jubilee MCAs that Raila is not the elected president of Kenya.
