Six mentally challenged women from one family were rescued in Kabete, Kiambu county from men - among them their father - taking advantage of their situation to sexually abuse them.

The women, four sisters aged between 15 and 30 and two girls aged 10 and 11 years - born of one of the four sisters- were rescued from Kiangari village by anti-gender based violence activists on Thursday.

David Gachuruba, a community policing officer in the area, said the girls - whose mother is also mentally challenged - have been suffering under the silent watch of neighbours.

"One of the girls is pregnant as a result of the rape by her father, none of them can coherently explain what has been taking place but we thought it wise to move the family out of the area," he said.

Gachuruba said that since the arrest of their father, some unknown men have been going to the family’s home in the guise of robbery and only take turns to rape the girls.

"The criminals normally declare that since the family has no money to pay them, they have to rape the girls until their debt has been paid," he said.

Kiambu woman representative Annah Nyokabi, who has stepped in to save the girls, condemned the heinous act.

"It is unfortunate that any person would choose to abuse these girls because of their ignorance," she said.

This is why we want Gender Based Violence Centres established across the 47 counties for victims of such abuses to have a safe haven.

"We need to champion for resources to establish these centres," she said.

The woman rep asked residents to look out for vulnerable groups amid growing cases of domestic and sexual abuse.
