Police have on Friday night killed a gunman in California Estate, Nairobi.

They also recovered Sh16,000, a pistol and four bullets from the suspect.

The gunman, aged about 23, is suspected to be behind spate of robberies and killings in Eastleigh.

Police said he was in the company of three others and had been attacking and robbing pedestrians when an alarm was raised.

"We got a tip off from members of the public [and] undercover police were dispatched to the area," district administration police commandant in Kamukunji, Bungei Adam, said.

He said the weapon will be taken for forensic analysis to establish if it has been used in any other crimes in the area.

He also said the gunman has been on the police radar.

Cases of armed robberies have been on the rise in California and neighbouring Eastleigh.

An activist who resides in the area expressed his gratitude to the police for taking action against increased incidents of robberies.

"We thank the law enforcement officers for the quick response, but we are also asking for heightened security presence in Eastleigh," Mohamed Ahmed said.
