Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua yesterday told off Kieni MP Kanini Kega for criticising the county government. He urged the MP to stop acting as the county prefect.

“Mind your own business. Every time you talk in public, 90 per cent of your speech is about the county government,” Gachagua said on Gukena FM breakfast show.

He said Kega should develop his constituency using the CDF and should not blame the county government “because I know my work”.

“This is all politics and somebody has sent Kega to malign my name. Let him stop campaigns because it is too early. If he wants the governor’s seat, let him announce it,” Gachagua said.

Kega has complained that his constituency, which counts 50 per cent of the county, will suffer the most because of the budget crisis.

Gachagua rejected the Sh6.4 billion budget, saying the assembly’s amendments were unconstitutional. The county is operating on half of the 2015-16 budget after a request

to withdraw funds was approved by the Controller of Budget.

Gachagua’s remarks are likely to fuel the wrangles between him and MPs. The governor also lashed out at speaker Mwangi Mugo, saying he is among the people planning his impeachment.

“The speaker should be blamed for all this crisis because he is interested in the Senate seat. He should make it public. Mugo has even allowed abusive language on the floor of the house,” Gachagua said. The speaker could not be reached on the phone.

The impeachment motion was not debated on Tuesday after MCAs exchanged blows. Before the start of the afternoon session, Chinga MCA Paul Ngiria was ambushed and floored by five colleagues in the assembly compound. His shirt and tie were torn. Ngiria is Gachagua’s staunch supporter.
